The Power of Intercession

Intercession is one of the most astonishing privileges God gives His people. Scripture never portrays prayer as whispering into a void or trying to get heaven’s attention. Instead, intercession is pictured as partnership — the living God inviting His sons and daughters to participate in His will being done on earth.

Paul writes, “We are God’s fellow workers” (1 Cor. 3:9). Think about that.Your prayers are not a polite courtesy to God — they are weapons, bridges, and channels through which His power flows.

When you intercede for someone — a child, a nation, a prodigal, a broken marriage, a hostile culture — you’re not trying to bail out the ocean with an eyedropper. You are aligning with the Almighty. You are stepping into a role of spiritual governance He designed for His children.

God could act alone. But He dignifies us by saying:

“Ask of Me…” (Psalm 2:8).

“Call upon Me…” (Jeremiah 33:3).

“You have not because you ask not.” (James 4:2).

When a child of God - through faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ - truly prays, heaven moves.

DIGGING DEEPER

Scriptures to study:

  • Exodus 32:7–14 — Moses stands in the breach, and God responds.

  • Daniel 9 — Intercession shaped by Scripture and repentance.

  • Luke 18:1–8 — Jesus insists on persistent prayer.

  • Ephesians 6:18 — Warfare intercession for all the saints.

  • Colossians 4:12 — Epaphras “wrestling” in prayer for others.

Questions for meditation:

  • What burden has God placed on your heart lately?

  • Where might He be inviting you to “stand in the gap”?

  • Is there a person or situation you’ve stopped

praying for — and should resume?

  • How does it change your view of intercession to see it as partnership instead of pleading?

Journal prompt: “Lord, whom are You calling me to intercede for today — and how can I pray according to Your Word and Your heart?”

Of course, the saying of a prayer is the reflection of a monumental and life-changing heart decision, but this is a good guide.
