The God Who Lowers Himself
"Who is like the LORD our God…
who stoops down to look on heaven and on the earth?”
— Psalm 113:5–6
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
— Psalm 147:3
This is one of the most startling descriptions of God in Scripture: the One exalted above the nations must bend down even to look at the heavens. Yet He bends further still — toward the lowly, the afflicted, the overlooked.
Divine condescension is not a New Testament invention. The incarnation begins long before Bethlehem, because God has always been the God who comes down.
This is not pity. This is covenant love.
The same God who maintains galaxies also attends to wounds, tears, fears, and troubles — not from afar, but up close.
The Psalms reveal a God who is both infinitely high and intimately near.
And this tells us something essential:
Our weakness is not an obstacle to God; it is an invitation.
He comes precisely to the place where we cannot.

The God Who Bends Low
Psalm 113:5–6
Psalm 147:3
1. Explore God’s “Stooping” in Scripture
Key passages:
Psalm 18:35 — “Your gentleness made me great.”
Psalm 34:18 — “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted.”
Exodus 3:7–8 — God comes down to deliver Israel.
The stooping of God is a continuous theme; He truly is the God Who lowers Himself to us.
2. Connect This to the Incarnation
Philippians 2:6–8 — Christ “emptied Himself… took the form of a servant.”
John 1:14 — “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
Hebrews 4:15 — A High Priest who sympathizes with weakness.
The God who “stoops” in the Psalms is the God who descends in Christ.
3. God’s Nearness in Suffering
Scripture repeatedly insists:
God is closest when His people are lowest.
Examples:
Hagar in the wilderness (Genesis 16)
Elijah under the broom tree (1 Kings 19)
Hezekiah on his sickbed (Isaiah 38)
God bends down, not away.

4. Questions for Reflection
Do I truly believe God meets me in weakness — not after I overcome it?
Where have I seen Him “stoop” in my own life?
What area of pain or fear do I need to invite His nearness into?
