His Name is "Mighty God"

This week I am excited to take us through one of the most famous Biblical passages we associate with the celebration of the Birth of Christ:
“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”
Isaiah 9:6-7
This passage is just chock full to the brim of rich theology and wondrous, freeing, liberating, saving truth! Join me through the week as we take a closer look in my Daily Digs...

The instant Adam & Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, I picture God’s right foot – at that very moment – landing with a majestic THUD onto planet earth, shaking its very foundations and winning His fallen creation back from the brink of death and disaster to life - and to life eternal!

At that very moment, the plan of salvation was set into motion, and God came crashing to earth to redeem His creation.
God immediately stepped in Himself, the Mighty God of the universe, as He was (and IS) the only One who could restore life to what, now, had become death.
It wouldn't be until many centuries later when this earth-shattering, world-changing THUD would come crashing onto the earth in the form of a wee, helpless baby boy, born into an ordinary, humble human family, and placed on top of some straw in an ignoble birthplace; an animal feeding trough made of stone.
Today, I want to draw us more closely into what it means that Our Savior - the Ultimate Champion - the LORD Jesus Christ - is Mighty God.
LET'S GO DEEPER - "MIGHTY GOD" IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

His Name Is "Mighty God" Isaiah 9:6
“For unto us a Child is born…
and His name shall be called…
Mighty God.”
The Hebrew title is ’El Gibbor — literally:
God the Mighty One
God the Warrior
God the Champion
God whose strength is unmatched

FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
El Gibbor — The Mighty God Revealed
1. The name “Mighty God” appears explicitly in Isaiah’s own writings
“In that day the remnant of Israel… will rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, the LORD their God.…A remnant will return… to the Mighty God (El Gibbor).”— Isaiah 10:20–21
Isaiah uses the same exact title for YHWH Himself — making it unmistakable that the Child of 9:6 bears the divine name.

2. God’s might in creation
“Ah, Lord GOD! Behold,
You have made the heavens and the earth
by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm!
Nothing is too hard for You.”— Jeremiah 32:17
“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,
and by the breath of His mouth all their host.”— Psalm 33:6

3. God as the Warrior who fights for His people:
“The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is His name.”— Exodus 15:3
“Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, shattered the enemy.”
— Exodus 15:6
“For the LORD your God is He who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.”
—Deuteronomy 20:4

4. God’s unmatched strength
“Who is this King of glory?
The LORD strong and mighty,
the LORD mighty in battle.”
— Psalm 24:8
“Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God.”
— Psalm 62:11

5. His majesty over rulers and nations
“He brings princes to nothing and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness.”
— Isaiah 40:23
“No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the LORD.”
— Proverbs 21:30
“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him. He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.” — Daniel 2:20–21
6. His might saves!

This promise of a mighty saving God
sets the stage for the coming of Christ.
LET'S DIG DEEPER - "MIGHTY GOD" IN THE NEW TESTAMENT!

The Mighty God Appears in Flesh

1. Jesus is declared fully God
“In the beginning was the Word… and the Word was God.”
— John 1:1
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
— John 1:14
John could not be more clear:
The One in the manger is the eternal God who made all things.

2. The fullness of God dwells in Him
“For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells bodily.”
— Colossians 2:9
“For it pleased the Father that in Him
all the fullness should dwell.”
— Colossians 1:19
“He is the radiance of the glory of God
and the exact imprint of His nature,
and He upholds the universe
by the word of His power.”
— Hebrews 1:3
One of the strongest divinity declarations in the NT:
Radiance → not a reflection, but the source of divine light
Exact imprint (charaktēr) → exact representation of the divine essence
Upholds the universe → an explicitly divine prerogative

3. Jesus demonstrates divine might over creation
“Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”— Mark 4:41
The One who commanded the storm is the same God who commanded the seas in Exodus 14.

4. His authority over demons, disease, death
“For with authority and power
He commands the unclean spirits,
and they come out!”
— Luke 4:36
“He has abolished death
and brought life and immortality to light.”
— 2 Timothy 1:10

5. He upholds the universe
“He upholds all things by the word of His power.”
— Hebrews 1:3
This is Mighty God language. The Child carries galaxies on His shoulders.

6. He is the victorious King
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”
— Matthew 28:18
“He must reign until He has
put all His enemies under His feet.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:25
“Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse!
The One sitting on it is called Faithful and True…
From His mouth comes a sharp sword…
and on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written,
King of kings and Lord of lords.”
— Revelation 19:11, 15–16

Let's think, reflect, or, like Mary, ponder...
When I consider that the Child of Isaiah 9:6 is the same God described in Psalm 24 and Exodus 15, what rises in my heart toward Him?
How does Jesus’ divine authority in the Gospels (Mark 4, Luke 4, Matthew 28) expand my awe of Him?
Which passage today most enlarges my vision of Christ’s majesty and power?
What does it mean that the God who upholds the universe (Hebrews 1:3) chose to dwell among us?
Where do I sense the Spirit inviting me to move from mere admiration to true worship?
"Unto us a child is born - The King of kings and Lord of lords
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore"
"He Shall Reign Forevermore"
In the bleak mid-winter, all creation groans
For a world in darkness, frozen like a stone
Light is breaking, in a stable
For a throne
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
Unto us a child is born
The King of kings and Lord of lords
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
If I were a wise man, I would travel far
And if I were a shepherd, I would do my part
But poor as I am
I will give to Him my heart
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
Unto us a child is born
The King of kings and Lord of lords
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
Here within a manger lies
The One who made the starry skies
This baby born for sacrifice
Christ, the Messiah
Into our hopes, into our fears
The Savior of the world appears
The promise of eternal years
Christ, the Messiah
He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
Unto us a child is born
The King of kings and Lord of lords
And He shall reign forevermore, forevermore
